Education Program
NICCEE Core Function
The Education Program will build a Nitrogen Learning Ecosystem to train the next generation of social innovators, engineers, and data scientists. This ecosystem is built on:
- Knowledge Building: NICCEE is offering a spring semester issue study group course for graduate students to explore nitrogen-related challenges.
- Application: Students that participate in the NICCEE course are eligible to attend and present at the annual Nitrogen Summer Institute.
- Real-World Experience: An internship program will offer opportunities to work at partner organizations and access to non-academic career opportunity networks.
Cross-Institute Course for Graduate Students
NICCEE annually offers a unique, cross-institute graduate-level elective course entitled “Emerging Nitrogen Technology & Sustainability Challenges from Farm to Fork.” The course is offered synchronously on Zoom to PhD and masters students in the US (UMCES, UMD, UMES), Canada (University of Guelph, University of Manitoba, McGill University), and Morocco (Mohammed VI Polytechnic University).
This course is centered on student-led learning and creates opportunities for students to collaborate with local stakeholders and international peers. It features professors and speakers from around the world, and it offers transdisciplinary professional development in qualitative data collection, investigating action-oriented solutions for sustainable nitrogen management, and integrating natural and social science perspectives.

Internship Opportunities
The new NICCEE Internship Program provides graduate students in the NICCEE community with hands-on, real-world experience through placements with partner organizations that are shaping the future of nitrogen management, technologies and policy.
The Internship Program offers students opportunities to work at partner organizations like the International Fertilizer Association (IFA) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and provides students access to non-academic career opportunity networks. Opportunities will be posted as they become available.
