Hosted by the Global Nitrogen Innovation Center for Clean Energy and the Environment (NICCEE), the program explored how emerging technologies, governance frameworks, and on-the-ground agricultural practice can jointly shape the future of the global nitrogen system.

The week included the third annual Nitrogen Summer Institute (June 15–17, 2026) and the Canadian Green Ammonia Governance Workshop (June 18, 2026), building on NICCEE’s growing international network and its mission to connect science, policy, and practice in nitrogen sustainability.

Field-based learning grounds systems-level discussion

The Nitrogen Summer Institute opened with a field excursion across southern Ontario, offering a direct look at agricultural supply chains and innovation sites shaping fertilizer production and distribution. Stops included Sollio Agriculture facilities at Hamilton Port, Campden Grains, and the Harrcroft Acres Living Lab site.

Across two days of sessions at the Nitrogen Summer Institute, participants examined the evolving landscape of nitrogen management in Canada and around the world, with a focus on both technological innovation and implementation challenges. Key themes included:

  • Nitrogen management in agriculture in Canada, the US, and the UK
  • Technical adoption pathways for green ammonia in agriculture
  • Governance and deployment frameworks for green ammonia in North AmericaField trip - Living Lab - Nitrogen Summer Institute 2026
  • “N-Solutions Explorer” development activities, connecting science and nitrogen management interventions

Governance and deployment pathways for green ammonia in Canada

The Nitrogen Summer Institute was followed by the Canadian Green Ammonia Governance Workshop, which convened experts across sectors and disciplines to examine policy frameworks and market conditions shaping the future of green ammonia.

A growing international community working across scales

Panel session at the Nitrogen Summer Institute 2026Together, the 2026 Summer Event Series reflected the strength and diversity of NICCEE’s international network and the importance of sustained interdisciplinary collaboration. Across field visits, technical sessions, and governance discussions, participants worked to bridge disciplinary boundaries and connect scientific insight with practical implementation challenges.

NICCEE extends its sincere appreciation to all speakers, facilitators, and participants for their contributions throughout the week, as well as to the University of Guelph for hosting these successful events.

The Global Center also acknowledges funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), along with the many institutional and organizational partners that continue to support NICCEE’s mission.

More highlights, photos, and video materials from the 2026 Summer Event Series will be shared in the coming weeks.
